Karatus is a city-state in the fictional continent of Eldoria. Located along the Karatu River in the eastern highlands, it functions as a regional center for trade, manufacturing, and governance. The city is known for its durable ashlar architecture and active guild economy.

History and government: Karatus traces its origins to settler communities of the Karati people in the early Eldorian era. It developed into a principal city-state within a loose confederation of neighboring towns. Governance is a hybrid system, led by a council of elders and merchants, with a magistrate chosen by lottery for two-year terms. Law combines customary practices with written codes.

Economy and society: The economy centers on quarrying, stonework, pottery, metal goods, and river trade. A large central market and several guild halls coordinate production and distribution. The population is diverse, with families of artisans, merchants, and farmers; common languages include Eldorian and the local dialect Karathic.
