Karakterkódolási, often referred to as character encoding, is a system that assigns a unique numerical value to each character in a writing system. This allows computers and other digital devices to store, process, and transmit text. Without character encoding, digital text would be unintelligible as it would just be a sequence of raw binary data.

Different character encodings exist, each supporting varying sets of characters and languages. Early encodings like ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) were limited to English characters, numbers, and basic punctuation. As the need to represent characters from other languages arose, extended ASCII variants and later, more comprehensive standards like Unicode, were developed.

Unicode is the dominant character encoding standard today. It aims to provide a unique number, called a code point, for every character in every writing system, as well as symbols and emojis. UTF-8 is a popular encoding scheme that implements Unicode. It is a variable-width encoding, meaning it uses one to four bytes to represent a Unicode code point. This flexibility makes UTF-8 efficient for both English text and text containing a wide range of international characters. Other Unicode encodings include UTF-16 and UTF-32, which use more fixed byte lengths.

The choice of character encoding is crucial for ensuring that text is displayed correctly across different systems and applications. Mismatches in encoding can lead to garbled text, known as mojibake, where characters appear as meaningless symbols. Therefore, understanding and correctly applying character encodings is fundamental to digital communication and data handling.
