Kapslingsskyddet

Kapslingsskyddet, often referred to by its abbreviation IP rating, is a standard used to classify the degree of protection provided by an electrical enclosure against ingress of solid objects and water. The International Protection marking, as it is formally known, consists of the letters IP followed by two digits. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid foreign objects, including dust. A higher first digit signifies better protection. The second digit indicates the level of protection against water. Again, a higher second digit denotes greater protection against water ingress.

For example, an IP rating of IP67 means the enclosure is dust-tight (the highest rating for solid objects) and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Common applications for enclosures with specific IP ratings include outdoor electrical equipment, industrial machinery, and consumer electronics exposed to potentially harsh environments. Understanding IP ratings is crucial for selecting the appropriate enclosure to ensure the safety and longevity of electrical components. Various standards bodies, such as the IEC, define and maintain these IP rating specifications.
