Kapillæreffekter, also known as capillary action, describe the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of, or even in opposition to, external forces like gravity. This phenomenon is driven by a combination of intermolecular forces: adhesion, the attraction between the liquid molecules and the surface of the container, and cohesion, the attraction between the liquid molecules themselves. When adhesive forces are stronger than cohesive forces, the liquid will "wet" the surface and be drawn upwards into a narrow tube or capillary. The smaller the diameter of the tube, the higher the liquid will rise.

The height to which a liquid rises due to capillary action is inversely proportional to the radius of the capillary tube. This is described by the Jurin's law, which states that the height is proportional to the surface tension of the liquid and inversely proportional to the density of the liquid and the radius of the tube. Temperature can also influence capillary action, as it affects the surface tension and viscosity of the liquid.

Capillary action plays a crucial role in many natural and industrial processes. In plants, it is essential for transporting water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves, overcoming the force of gravity. It is also observed in the way water moves through soil, influencing plant growth and groundwater movement. In everyday life, capillary effects are seen in phenomena like the wicking action of a paper towel, the spreading of ink on paper, and the functioning of oil lamps. Understanding capillary action is fundamental in fields such as fluid mechanics, material science, and biology.
