Kamatcseres refers to a financial instrument or agreement where two parties exchange interest rate payments on a specified notional principal amount. This exchange is typically structured to manage interest rate risk. One party might have a floating rate obligation and enter into a kamatcseres to convert it to a fixed rate, while the other party does the opposite. The principal amount itself is usually not exchanged, only the interest payments based on that principal.

The core purpose of a kamatcseres is to hedge against adverse movements in interest rates or to speculate on future rate changes. For example, a company expecting interest rates to rise might enter into a kamatcseres to fix their borrowing costs. Conversely, an investor anticipating falling rates might use a kamatcseres to benefit from lower future payments. These agreements are a form of derivative contract and are often traded over-the-counter (OTC) between financial institutions, although they can also be exchange-traded. The specific terms, including the notional principal, maturity date, fixed rate, and floating rate index, are agreed upon by the parties involved. The net difference between the two interest payments is typically settled periodically.
