Kalvarija

Kalvarija is a municipality located in the southwest of Lithuania, within the Marijampolė County. The town of Kalvarija serves as the administrative center of the municipality. Historically, Kalvarija was a significant trading post and a center for Jewish life, with a large and influential Jewish community for centuries.

The area is characterized by its rolling landscape, typical of the southern Lithuanian moraine. The Šešupė River flows through the municipality, contributing to the local scenery. Agriculture remains a primary economic activity in the region.

Kalvarija's history dates back to the 17th century. It was granted Magdeburg Rights in 1747, which facilitated its development as a town. Today, Kalvarija municipality is home to several smaller villages and settlements in addition to the town.
