Kalsittannelser refers to mineral formations composed primarily of calcite, a common carbonate mineral. Calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) is a polymorphic form of calcium carbonate, meaning it can crystallize in different forms. Calcite is the most stable form at standard temperature and pressure. These formations are found in a wide variety of geological environments.

They are most famously known for their presence in caves, where they are formed by the slow precipitation of calcium carbonate from water. Dripstones, such as stalactites and stalagmites, are classic examples of calcite formations in caves. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, growing downwards, while stalagmites grow upwards from the cave floor. Other cave speleothems made of calcite include flowstones, draperies, and soda straws.

Outside of caves, calcite formations can occur in sedimentary rocks like limestone and marble. Limestone is largely composed of calcite, often formed from the accumulation of marine organisms' shells and skeletons. Marble is a metamorphic rock that results from the recrystallization of limestone under heat and pressure, retaining its calcite composition. Calcite also forms veins in other rock types and can be found in hydrothermal deposits. The appearance of calcite formations varies greatly depending on the conditions of their formation, ranging from translucent and crystalline to opaque and earthy.
