Kalentereitaan

Kalentereitaan is a traditional Finnish folk music and dance event celebrated during the Christmas season. It is primarily observed in the southwestern regions of Finland, particularly in the Ostrobothnia area. The custom involves groups of young people, often dressed in festive costumes, going from house to house performing songs and dances for the inhabitants.

The purpose of these visits is to bring Christmas greetings and good cheer to households. In return for their performances, the kalenteritai-goers are typically offered food, drinks, and sometimes small monetary gifts. The tradition is rooted in older customs of visiting and celebrating the winter solstice and the Christmas period, emphasizing community and shared joy.
