Kalemie
Kalemie is a city in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, serving as the provincial capital. It lies on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika, near the border with Tanzania. The city functions as a major lake port, facilitating trade and transportation across the lake and into neighboring regions. Economically, Kalemie relies on activities such as fishing, agriculture, and trade, with the lake providing a vital resource for both livelihood and commerce. Historically, the area was part of the Belgian Congo during colonial rule, and Kalemie developed as a settlement around the lake's transportation network. The city's population, estimated at around 35,000, reflects its role as a regional hub in the South Kivu Province, supporting local governance, commerce, and social services.
