Kalciumkanavat, also known as calcium channels, are specialized protein structures located within the cell membrane that facilitate the entry of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) into cells. These channels play a critical role in various physiological processes by regulating intracellular calcium levels, which serve as a vital second messenger in cellular signaling pathways.

There are several types of calcium channels, classified primarily into voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs), ligand-gated channels, and store-operated channels. Voltage-gated calcium channels respond to changes in membrane potential and are essential in excitable tissues such as nerves and muscles, including the heart. Dysfunction or abnormal regulation of calcium channels has been linked to various diseases, including cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension, epilepsy, and certain neurodegenerative disorders.
