Kajaani

Kajaani is a town and municipality in Finland, located in the Kainuu region in eastern Finland. It serves as the regional capital and population center of Kainuu. The town sits on the Kajaani River near the southern shores of Lake Oulujärvi.

The municipality has about 38,000 inhabitants and is the largest urban center in Kainuu. The local economy is based on public administration, education, health care, retail and forestry-related industries, with diversification into services and light manufacturing.

Historically, Kajaani developed from a 17th-century settlement and town charter. The area is known for Kajaani Castle, a fortress whose ruins are preserved near the town center, reflecting its historical administrative role.
