Kahdentahtimoottorit, also known as two-stroke engines, are internal combustion engines that complete a power cycle in two strokes of the piston. This is in contrast to the more common four-stroke engines, which complete the cycle in four strokes. The two-stroke cycle typically consists of a compression stroke, a power stroke, and an exhaust stroke, with the intake and exhaust processes occurring during the same stroke. This design is often used in small, lightweight engines, such as those found in motorcycles, chainsaws, and some model aircraft.

The primary advantage of two-stroke engines is their simplicity and compact size, which can lead to lower production costs and higher power-to-weight ratios. However, they also have several disadvantages. The most significant issue is the mixing of oil and fuel, which can lead to increased emissions and reduced engine efficiency. Additionally, two-stroke engines tend to be noisier and produce more vibrations than their four-stroke counterparts. Despite these drawbacks, two-stroke engines remain popular in certain applications due to their simplicity and performance characteristics.
