Kaasutinmoottorit, also known as carburetor engines, are a type of internal combustion engine that relies on a carburetor to mix fuel and air in the correct proportions for combustion. This mixing process is crucial for the engine's operation. The carburetor draws in air, which then passes over a Venturi-shaped tube. As the air speeds up through the Venturi, its pressure drops, creating a vacuum. This vacuum, in turn, draws fuel from a fuel bowl or reservoir through a jet. The fuel is atomized and mixed with the incoming air, forming a combustible mixture that is then drawn into the engine's cylinders.

The amount of fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders is controlled by the throttle valve, which is operated by the driver or operator. When the throttle is opened, more mixture enters, increasing engine power. When it is closed, less mixture enters, reducing power. Early automobiles and many small engines, such as those found in lawnmowers and motorcycles, commonly utilized carburetor engines. While they were a significant advancement in engine technology, they have largely been replaced by more modern fuel injection systems in many applications due to fuel efficiency and emissions control advantages. However, carburetor engines remain in use in some older vehicles and for specific applications where their simplicity and lower cost are advantageous. The tuning of a carburetor can be a complex process, requiring adjustments to fuel jets and other components to achieve optimal performance under varying conditions.
