KNMIalert

KNMIalert is a public warning system operated by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) to deliver timely warnings and safety information about hazardous weather and related emergencies to residents, businesses, and organizations in the Netherlands. The system is designed to enable rapid dissemination of alerts when KNMI forecasts or detects events that could pose risks to life, health, or property, such as severe storms, heavy rainfall and flooding, extreme heat or cold, strong winds, or other environmental hazards.

KNMIalert uses multiple channels to reach the public. Primary channels include location-based mobile alerts sent through cellular networks (cell broadcast) to devices in the affected area, and notices published on KNMI’s website and official social media accounts. Alerts are also conveyed through traditional media such as television and radio, and may be distributed via apps and other digital services. The messages typically include the hazard type, the expected time frame, the geographic area affected, and practical safety guidance. In addition to text, warnings may reference KNMI color codes for weather warnings (yellow, orange, red) to indicate increasing levels of danger.

KNMIalert forms part of KNMI’s broader warning and information system and is intended to reach a broad audience quickly during imminent or ongoing hazards. The system is used to prompt protective actions by individuals and organizations and to help authorities coordinate responses as needed.
