KMnO4s

Potassium permanganate, with the chemical formula KMnO4, is a chemical compound consisting of potassium ions (K+) and permanganate ions (MnO4-). The permanganate ion is characterized by a central manganese atom in a +7 oxidation state, bonded to four oxygen atoms. This structure gives KMnO4 its distinctive deep purple color.

KMnO4 is a strong oxidizing agent. This property makes it useful in a variety of applications, including water purification where it can oxidize impurities and disinfect water. It is also used in chemical synthesis as an oxidant, for example, in the production of saccharin or in organic reactions to cleave carbon-carbon double bonds. In medicine, dilute solutions of potassium permanganate have been used as an antiseptic and disinfectant for skin conditions, although its use is now less common due to the availability of gentler alternatives.

The compound is soluble in water, forming a purple solution. It is a solid at room temperature. When heated strongly, potassium permanganate decomposes. It reacts vigorously with many organic substances and reducing agents, and such reactions can be exothermic and potentially hazardous. Due to its strong oxidizing nature, it should be handled with care and stored away from combustible materials.
