Kümnendmärgid, often translated as decimal marks or decimal separators, are symbols used in mathematics and finance to indicate the separation between the integer and fractional parts of a number written in decimal notation. The most common symbols used globally are the period (.) and the comma (,).

The choice of decimal separator varies significantly by country and region. In many English-speaking countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, the period is the standard decimal separator. For instance, the number "one and a half" is written as 1.5. Conversely, in many European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy, the comma is used as the decimal separator, so one and a half would be written as 1,5.

This divergence can lead to confusion in international contexts, particularly in scientific and financial reporting. To mitigate this, the International System of Units (SI) recommends using a comma as the decimal separator, though the period remains widely used. Additionally, some contexts, particularly in computing and programming, may allow for either symbol or have specific configuration settings to determine the decimal separator.
