Költségtípusok refer to the various categories into which expenses can be classified within a business or organization. Understanding these classifications is crucial for effective financial management, budgeting, and decision-making.

One common distinction is between fixed and variable costs. Fixed costs remain constant regardless of the production or sales volume, such as rent, salaries, or insurance premiums. Variable costs, on the other hand, fluctuate directly with the level of activity. Examples include raw materials, direct labor, and sales commissions.

Another important categorization is between direct and indirect costs. Direct costs are directly attributable to the production of a specific good or service, such as the materials used in a product or the labor of assembly line workers. Indirect costs, also known as overhead, cannot be easily traced to a specific cost object and include expenses like factory utilities, administrative salaries, or marketing.

Costs can also be classified as operating or non-operating. Operating costs are those incurred in the normal course of business operations, while non-operating costs arise from activities outside of the core business, such as interest expenses or losses from asset sales.

Furthermore, costs can be categorized as product costs or period costs. Product costs are directly associated with the creation of a product and are included in the cost of goods sold, such as direct materials and direct labor. Period costs are expensed in the period in which they are incurred, such as selling, general, and administrative expenses. The proper identification and allocation of these cost types are fundamental to accurate financial reporting and strategic planning.
