Kõrvapõletik, scientifically known as otitis, refers to inflammation of the ear. It is a common condition that can affect different parts of the ear, leading to varying symptoms and causes. The most frequent type is otitis media, which is an infection of the middle ear, typically caused by bacteria or viruses. This often occurs as a complication of a cold, flu, or other upper respiratory infection, as inflammation and mucus can block the Eustachian tube, trapping fluid in the middle ear.

Symptoms of otitis media can include ear pain, feeling of fullness in the ear, temporary hearing loss, and sometimes discharge. In children, it may also manifest as irritability, difficulty sleeping, and tugging at the ear. Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination of the ear using an otoscope. Treatment for otitis media depends on the severity and cause. Viral infections often resolve on their own, while bacterial infections may require antibiotics. Pain relief medication can also be used to manage discomfort.

Other forms of ear infection include otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear, which affects the outer ear canal. This is often caused by water remaining in the ear after swimming, creating a moist environment for bacteria or fungi to grow. Symptoms include itching, redness, swelling, and pain in the outer ear, which can worsen when the earlobe is touched. Treatment typically involves antibiotic or antifungal ear drops. Less common is otitis interna, inflammation of the inner ear, which can cause dizziness and balance problems. Prompt medical attention is important for any suspected ear infection to prevent complications.
