Kõripõletik, also known as laryngitis, is an inflammation of the larynx, the voice box located in the throat. It is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. Other causes can include bacterial infections, overuse of the voice (such as shouting or singing for extended periods), exposure to irritants like smoke or pollution, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The primary symptom of laryngitis is hoarseness or a loss of voice. Other symptoms may include a sore throat, dry cough, fever, and difficulty swallowing. In most cases, laryngitis is acute, meaning it comes on suddenly and lasts for a short period, typically a week or two. Chronic laryngitis, which lasts for more than three weeks, can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition and requires medical attention.

Diagnosis is usually based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination of the throat. If chronic laryngitis is suspected or if other conditions are being considered, a doctor may perform further tests, such as a laryngoscopy, which allows a direct view of the vocal cords.

Treatment for acute laryngitis primarily involves rest for the voice, avoiding irritants, and staying hydrated. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort. For bacterial infections, antibiotics may be prescribed. If GERD is the cause, treatment will focus on managing acid reflux. In cases of chronic laryngitis, identifying and addressing the underlying cause is crucial. Voice therapy may also be beneficial. Prevention strategies include practicing good vocal hygiene, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and managing conditions like GERD.
