Käsihuuhteilla, often translated as hand sanitizers or hand rubs, are a liquid, foam, or gel formulation intended to disinfect hands. They are primarily used when soap and water are not available or practical. The active ingredients in most hand sanitizers are alcohol-based, typically ethanol or isopropanol, in concentrations of at least 60%. These alcohol formulations kill a wide range of bacteria and viruses by denaturing their proteins. Some alcohol-free hand sanitizers exist, often containing quaternary ammonium compounds, but their efficacy can be more limited and they may not be as effective against all types of pathogens.
