Jäämuodostus refers to the process by which water transforms into ice. This occurs when the temperature of water drops to its freezing point, which is 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at standard atmospheric pressure. At this temperature, the kinetic energy of the water molecules decreases to a point where the intermolecular forces can hold them in a fixed, ordered crystalline structure.

The formation of ice can happen in various environments, from lakes and rivers to the atmosphere. In aquatic settings, freezing typically begins at the surface, as colder water is denser and sinks until it reaches 4 degrees Celsius, after which it becomes less dense and stays at the surface to cool further. This surface freezing insulates the water below, allowing aquatic life to survive in sub-zero temperatures. In the atmosphere, ice can form through the deposition of water vapor onto ice nuclei or through the freezing of supercooled water droplets.

Different types of ice can form depending on the conditions. For instance, sea ice forms from the freezing of saltwater, which is a more complex process due to the dissolved salts. Glaciers are large masses of ice that form over long periods from the accumulation and compaction of snow.
