Jäähdytysreaktiot refers to a phenomenon observed in certain chemical or physical processes where the temperature of the system decreases. This is the opposite of an exothermic reaction, which releases heat and increases temperature. In a cooling reaction, energy is absorbed from the surroundings, leading to a reduction in the kinetic energy of the particles within the system and thus a lower temperature.

This energy absorption is a fundamental aspect of endothermic processes. For a chemical reaction to be a cooling reaction, the enthalpy change of the reaction must be negative, meaning the products have a lower internal energy than the reactants. The energy difference is taken up by the surroundings. In physical processes, such as the evaporation of a liquid, the change of state from liquid to gas requires energy input, which is absorbed from the environment, causing cooling.

Common examples of cooling reactions or processes include the dissolution of certain salts in water, like ammonium nitrate. When ammonium nitrate dissolves in water, it absorbs heat from the water, causing the temperature of the solution to drop significantly. This property is utilized in instant cold packs, which are often used to treat injuries. Other examples include sweating in biological systems, where the evaporation of perspiration from the skin absorbs body heat, thus cooling the body. Similarly, when refrigerants evaporate within a cooling system, they absorb heat from the enclosed space, leading to a decrease in temperature. Understanding cooling reactions is crucial in various applications, from industrial processes to everyday comfort.
