Järviympäristöt, or lake environments, refer to the complex ecosystems centered around lakes. These aquatic systems are characterized by their standing water and are influenced by a multitude of biotic and abiotic factors. Abiotic components include water depth, temperature stratification, light penetration, dissolved oxygen levels, nutrient availability, and substrate type. Biotic factors encompass the diverse array of organisms that inhabit the lake, from microscopic phytoplankton and zooplankton to aquatic plants, invertebrates, fish, and birds.

The productivity and health of a lake environment are directly linked to nutrient levels. Eutrophic lakes are rich in nutrients, leading to abundant algal growth and often reduced water clarity. Oligotrophic lakes, conversely, have low nutrient concentrations, resulting in clear water and lower productivity. Mesotrophic lakes fall between these two extremes. Human activities, such as agricultural runoff, industrial discharge, and sewage, can significantly alter nutrient loads, often leading to eutrophication and impacting the entire ecosystem.

Lake environments play crucial roles in the broader landscape. They serve as vital habitats for a wide range of species, provide water resources for human consumption and industry, and contribute to the aesthetic and recreational value of an area.
