Juurtumisprosess refers to the physiological process by which a plant develops roots. This is a crucial stage in the life cycle of most plants, enabling them to anchor themselves in the substrate and absorb water and nutrients. The process typically begins with a seed, which, under favorable conditions of moisture, temperature, and oxygen, germinates. The first structure to emerge from the seed is usually the radicle, which develops into the primary root.

The radicle grows downwards, guided by gravitropism. As it elongates, it differentiates into various root tissues, including the root cap, epidermis, cortex, and vascular cylinder. The root cap protects the growing tip as it pushes through the soil. The epidermis forms root hairs, which greatly increase the surface area for absorption. The cortex stores food reserves and facilitates water and nutrient transport. The vascular cylinder contains xylem and phloem for long-distance transport.

In many plants, secondary root growth follows, leading to the development of lateral roots that branch off from the primary root. This increases the overall root system's reach and efficiency. Vegetative propagation methods, such as cuttings, also rely on inducing root formation from non-root tissues. Hormones, particularly auxins, play a significant role in stimulating and regulating root initiation and development in both seed germination and vegetative propagation.
