Juurijärjestelmällä, often translated as "root system," refers to the complex network of roots that anchor a plant and absorb water and nutrients from the soil. This fundamental plant organ is crucial for survival and growth, playing a vital role in the terrestrial ecosystem.

The primary functions of a root system include anchorage, which provides stability against wind and other forces, and absorption of essential resources. Roots are covered in root hairs, which greatly increase the surface area available for water and mineral uptake. These absorbed substances are then transported upwards to the rest of the plant through specialized vascular tissues.

Root systems can vary significantly in structure and form depending on the plant species and its environment. Some plants have a taproot system, characterized by a single, dominant main root from which smaller lateral roots branch off. Others possess a fibrous root system, consisting of a dense network of many thin roots originating from the stem base. Adventitious roots, which grow from parts of the plant other than the normal root, can also form under certain conditions.

Beyond their physiological roles, root systems are vital for soil health. They help prevent soil erosion by binding soil particles together and contribute to soil aeration and water infiltration. The decomposition of root matter also enriches the soil with organic material, supporting a diverse community of soil microorganisms.
