Closest to the tip is the root cap, a protective layer of cells that shields the delicate meristematic tissue as the root pushes through the soil. Behind the root cap lies the meristematic zone, where cell division occurs, generating new root cells. Further back is the elongation zone, where cells expand, pushing the root further into the soil. Finally, the maturation zone, where cells differentiate into specialized tissues like epidermis, cortex, and vascular tissue, and root hairs emerge to increase the surface area for absorption.
