Joure

Joure is a town in the province of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of De Fryske Marren. The town lies in the heart of Friesland and has a historic centre characterized by traditional Frisian architecture and a network of waterways that once supported local trade.

Joure developed as a local market town and agricultural hub. A notable part of its modern history is its association with the Dutch coffee brand Douwe Egberts. The company traces its roots to Joure, where it was established in the 18th century; it grew into one of the Netherlands’ leading coffee and tea brands and is now part of Jacobs Douwe Egberts.

In 2014, Joure became part of the new municipality De Fryske Marren after a regional reorganization; before that it belonged to the municipality of Skarsterlân. The town remains a local centre for services, retail, and culture within the region, hosting markets, festivals, and community facilities that serve residents of the surrounding rural area.

The economy today blends small-scale manufacturing, services, and tourism tied to Friesland’s rural landscape. Joure’s identity is closely linked to its historic streets, waterways, and its long-standing association with coffee production, which continues to be a point of reference for the town.
