Joodipuudus

Joodipuudus refers to a deficiency in iodine, an essential trace element crucial for the production of thyroid hormones. These hormones play a vital role in regulating metabolism, growth, and development, particularly in the brain.

The most common cause of joodipuudus is insufficient dietary intake of iodine. Iodine is naturally found in seawater, and consequently, in seafood and seaweed. However, iodine content in soil varies geographically, leading to iodine-poor regions where locally grown foods may lack this nutrient. In many countries, iodized salt is used to fortify the food supply and prevent widespread deficiency.

Symptoms of joodipuudus can range from mild to severe, depending on the extent and duration of the deficiency. Mild deficiency may result in fatigue and a slight enlargement of the thyroid gland, known as a goiter. Public health initiatives aimed at promoting the use of iodized salt have been highly effective in reducing the prevalence of joodipuudus globally.
