Johtohäviöt, also known as line losses or transmission losses, refer to the energy lost during the transmission and distribution of electricity. These losses are an inherent part of the electrical grid and occur due to various physical phenomena. The primary cause is the resistance of the conductors themselves. As electricity flows through wires, a portion of the energy is converted into heat due to this resistance, a process described by Joule's law. Higher current and higher resistance lead to greater heat losses.

Another significant factor contributing to johtohäviöt is the phenomenon of voltage drop. As electricity travels over long distances, the voltage decreases. This voltage drop can necessitate the use of larger, more expensive conductors to maintain adequate voltage levels at the point of consumption. Furthermore, magnetic losses in transformers and other electrical equipment used in the transmission and distribution network also contribute to overall energy losses. These losses can occur in the iron cores of transformers due to hysteresis and eddy currents.

Efforts to minimize johtohäviöt are crucial for improving the efficiency of the power system. Strategies include using higher voltage transmission lines to reduce current, employing more efficient conductor materials, and optimizing the design and operation of substations and distribution networks. Reducing these losses not only conserves energy but also lowers operational costs and reduces the environmental impact associated with electricity generation.
