Jarðtenging

Jarðtenging is an Icelandic term that translates to "earthing" or "grounding" in English. It refers to the process of connecting an electrical device or system to the earth, typically through a conductive wire. This connection serves as a safety measure to prevent electrical shock.

The primary purpose of jarðtenging is to provide a low-resistance path for electrical current to flow to the ground in the event of a fault. If a live wire accidentally touches the metal casing of an appliance, the casing becomes energized. Without jarðtenging, anyone touching the appliance could complete the circuit and receive a dangerous electric shock. However, with proper jarðtenging, the fault current flows directly to the earth, bypassing the user and often causing a fuse to blow or a circuit breaker to trip, thereby disconnecting the power.

In Iceland, as in many other countries, jarðtenging is a mandatory safety requirement for electrical installations and appliances. Electrical codes specify the methods and materials used for earthing to ensure its effectiveness. The earth wire is typically colored green and yellow. This safety practice is crucial for protecting people and property from the hazards of electricity.
