Januniyyas

Januniyyas are a group of Sufi orders that emerged in the 13th century, primarily in the regions of Syria and Iraq. The term "Januniyyas" translates to "possessed ones" or "madmen," reflecting the intense spiritual ecstasy and mystical experiences that are central to their practices. These Sufi orders are known for their emphasis on the spiritual path of love (ishq) and the pursuit of divine union (waqf).

The Januniyyas are characterized by their unique rituals and practices, which often involve communal gatherings, music, and dance. These events, known as "sama" or "sama'iyya," are believed to facilitate spiritual ecstasy and the direct experience of God. The Januniyyas also place a strong emphasis on the role of the dervish (a Sufi mystic) in leading the community and guiding the faithful on their spiritual journey.
