Jamnia, also known as Yavne, is a city in Israel that played a significant role in Jewish history. Located in the central coastal region of Israel, Jamnia is situated approximately 20 kilometers south of Tel Aviv and 7 kilometers north of Ashdod.

During the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, Jamnia was an important center of Jewish learning and rabbinic study. The city housed the academy of Hillel the Elder, a prominent Jewish scholar and leader, and later the academy of Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai, who played a key role in the establishment of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish supreme court. The city's academies attracted many prominent rabbis and scholars, who contributed to the development of Jewish law and customs.

In 68 CE, following the Jewish revolt against the Roman Empire, Jamnia became a key location for the Jewish leadership. During the Siege of Jerusalem, Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai led a group of rabbis from Jerusalem to Jamnia, establishing a new center of Jewish learning outside the besieged city. The Sanhedrin was reestablished in Jamnia, with Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai as its head.

Today, Jamnia is a small town with a population of around 23,000 people. While the city has undergone significant changes over the centuries, its historical significance remains an important part of Israel's cultural and Jewish heritage. Archaeological excavations have uncovered remains of the ancient city, including remains of the Hillel manuscript, a significant archaeological find that sheds light on the city's rich history.
