Jätedirektiivi

The Jätedirektiivi, or Waste Framework Directive, is a key piece of European Union legislation that sets the foundation for waste management policies across member states. Its primary objective is to protect the environment and human health by preventing or reducing the adverse impacts of waste generation and management. The directive establishes a waste hierarchy, prioritizing prevention, reuse, recycling, and other recovery operations over disposal, such as landfilling.

This legislation also defines key terms related to waste, including what constitutes waste and hazardous waste. It mandates that member states develop national waste management plans and sets targets for recycling and recovery rates. The Jätedirektiivi encourages the development of sustainable waste management practices and promotes a circular economy, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. It also addresses specific waste streams and promotes extended producer responsibility schemes. Member states are required to transpose the directive's provisions into their national laws and report on their progress towards achieving the set targets.
