Järjestysparametrin is a Finnish term that translates to "order parameter" in English. It is a concept used in physics, particularly in the study of phase transitions and critical phenomena. The order parameter is a macroscopic quantity that characterizes the state of a system and distinguishes between different phases. For instance, in a ferromagnetic material, the magnetization is an order parameter. Above the Curie temperature, the thermal fluctuations are strong enough to randomize the spins, resulting in zero net magnetization, and the material is in a paramagnetic phase. Below the Curie temperature, the interactions between spins cause them to align, leading to a spontaneous non-zero magnetization, indicating the ferromagnetic phase.

The order parameter is typically zero in one phase and non-zero in another, and it often changes continuously or discontinuously at the phase transition point. For example, in a liquid-gas transition at constant pressure, the difference in density between the liquid and gas phases can serve as an order parameter. At the critical point, the densities of the liquid and gas become equal, and the order parameter goes to zero. The behavior of the order parameter near the critical point provides crucial information about the universality class of the phase transition, meaning that different systems exhibiting the same critical behavior share the same critical exponents, regardless of their microscopic details. Understanding the order parameter is fundamental to describing and classifying phase transitions.
