Jääraaputukset, commonly known as ice scrapers, are tools used to remove ice and frost from surfaces, most frequently from the windshields and windows of vehicles. The primary function of an ice scraper is to create a clear line of sight for drivers during cold weather conditions. They are essential for safe operation of a vehicle when ice or frost obscures visibility.

The most common design of a jääraaputus features a rigid blade, often made of plastic, attached to a handle. The blade is typically angled to efficiently scrape away ice. Some models incorporate a brush on the opposite end of the handle, allowing users to clear away loose snow as well as scrape ice. The length of the handle can vary, with longer handles providing better reach for larger vehicles or for scraping the center of a windshield.

Materials used in the construction of ice scrapers are chosen for their durability and ability to withstand cold temperatures without becoming brittle. Plastic is the predominant material for both the blade and the handle, though some premium models might incorporate metal components for enhanced scraping power. The edge of the blade is designed to be sharp enough to cut through ice but not so sharp as to damage the glass.

The use of an ice scraper is a common winter maintenance task for vehicle owners. Regular use helps prevent the buildup of thick ice layers that can be difficult to remove and can impair visibility significantly. While effective, it is important to use them with care to avoid scratching the glass surface.
