Itämisvaihe

Itämisvaihe refers to the initial stage of plant growth, beginning with the germination of a seed. This critical period involves the dormant embryo within the seed awakening and commencing its development into a seedling. The process is triggered by favorable environmental conditions, primarily adequate moisture, suitable temperature, and sufficient oxygen. Water is absorbed by the seed, causing it to swell and activating enzymes within. These enzymes then break down stored food reserves, providing energy for the embryo to grow.

During itämisvaihe, the first structures to emerge are typically the radicle, which develops into the root system, and the plumule, which gives rise to the shoot. The radicle anchors the seedling and begins absorbing water and nutrients from the surrounding medium. The plumule grows upwards, seeking light, and will eventually develop leaves for photosynthesis. The duration and success of itämisvaihe depend heavily on the species of plant and the specific environmental factors. In some plants, the cotyledons, or seed leaves, emerge above ground and may even photosynthesize for a short period, while in others, they remain below ground, serving solely as a food source.
