ItäJerusalemin, meaning East Jerusalem in Finnish, refers to the eastern sector of the city of Jerusalem. Historically, it encompasses the Old City and surrounding areas that were under Jordanian control from 1948 until 1967. Following the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel captured and subsequently annexed East Jerusalem, a move that has not been recognized by the majority of the international community.

The area is of immense religious significance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, containing numerous holy sites such as the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound (known as Haram al-Sharif). This religious importance has made East Jerusalem a focal point of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The majority of East Jerusalem's population is Palestinian, with a significant Arab Christian minority in addition to a Muslim majority. Israel considers the entire city, including East Jerusalem, its undivided capital. Palestinians, conversely, envision East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. The status of East Jerusalem remains one of the most contentious and unresolved issues in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. International bodies and many countries advocate for a two-state solution, where an independent Palestinian state would include East Jerusalem as its capital.
