Istutusta

Istutusta is a term used in Finnish horticulture to describe the act of planting or transplanting a plant into soil or another growing medium. It covers establishing trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals in gardens, landscapes, and agricultural settings, including replanting and relocation of stock.

Planning and site preparation: Assess light, drainage, soil quality and climate suitability. Prepare the site by removing weeds, loosening soil, and incorporating organic matter. Choose species-appropriate spacing and determine the correct planting depth to place the root system at or just above soil level.

Planting technique: For container-grown plants, remove from pot and tease roots if necessary; for bare-root stock, keep roots moist. Dig a hole wider than the root system, position the plant at the right depth, backfill gradually, and firm the soil to eliminate air pockets. Place the root flare at or slightly above ground level for trees and larger shrubs, and mulch around to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from stems.

Post-plant care: Water thoroughly during establishment, apply a light mulch layer, and avoid heavy fertilization until growth resumes. For tall plants, stake if needed, and remove supports once established to prevent girdling.

Timing and risks: The main planting periods are spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate and rainfall is sufficient. Risks include transplant shock, drought, frost damage, and pests. Proper technique, soil preparation and aftercare improve establishment success.
