Iriath

Iriath is a city-state in the fantasy realm of Eldoria. Located on the delta of the Serene River, it serves as a major commercial and scholarly center, linking inland markets to seaborne trade.

The name Iriath derives from the ancient Irian word iri meaning "bright" and ath meaning "place." The city spreads across river terraces and islands, with a temperate climate and a network of canals.

Iriath was founded in the late 10th century by artisan guilds seeking autonomy from regional rulers. It grew through glassmaking, parchment production, and trade, and by the mid-12th century had achieved de facto independence while maintaining ceremonial ties to neighboring realms.

Governance rests in the Council of Guilds and a High Chancellor elected by guildmasters. Policy favors trade, craftsmanship, and scholarship. The economy centers on glassware, textiles, and manuscript production, supported by the Serene River port and overland caravan routes.

Cultural life centers on learning and craft. Notable sites include the Glass Spire, the Lyceum of Scrolls, and the Market of Echoes. The annual Confluence of Letters festival attracts scribes, traders, and artists.

Its population is about 120,000 in the current era, with diverse guild communities and languages such as Eldorian Common and Iriathian.
