Ionimuodostus

Ionimuodostus is a Finnish term that translates to "ion formation." It describes the process by which an atom or a molecule gains or loses one or more electrons, resulting in a charged species called an ion. Atoms are electrically neutral because they contain an equal number of protons (positive charge) and electrons (negative charge). When an atom gains electrons, it acquires an overall negative charge and becomes an anion. Conversely, when an atom loses electrons, it acquires an overall positive charge and becomes a cation. This process is fundamental to many chemical phenomena, including the formation of ionic bonds, where oppositely charged ions are attracted to each other. In solutions, ions play a crucial role in electrical conductivity.
