Intravenöser

Intravenöser refers to anything administered directly into a vein. This method of drug or fluid administration bypasses the digestive system and enters the bloodstream immediately, allowing for rapid absorption and therapeutic effect. It is commonly used in medical settings for various purposes.

Intravenous therapy can be employed to deliver medications, such as antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, or pain relievers. It is also a primary route for administering fluids to treat dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, or to provide nutritional support when oral intake is not possible. Blood transfusions are another example of intravenous administration.

The procedure involves inserting a needle or catheter into a vein, typically in the arm or hand, which is then connected to an IV bag or syringe containing the substance to be administered. While effective, intravenous administration carries potential risks, including infection at the insertion site, phlebitis (inflammation of the vein), or air embolism. Healthcare professionals carefully monitor patients receiving intravenous therapy to mitigate these risks. The term is derived from Latin, meaning "within the vein."
