Interventiotutkimukset, also known as intervention studies or experimental studies, are a type of scientific research designed to test the efficacy of a particular intervention. The intervention can be a medical treatment, a new drug, a surgical procedure, a public health program, or any other factor that researchers believe may have an effect. The primary goal of an intervention study is to determine if the intervention causes a specific outcome.

These studies typically involve comparing a group of participants who receive the intervention (the intervention group) with a group who do not receive it, or who receive a placebo or standard care (the control group). Participants are usually assigned to either the intervention or control group randomly, a process known as randomization. This randomization helps ensure that the groups are as similar as possible at the start of the study, minimizing bias.

Blinding is another common feature of intervention studies. In single-blind studies, participants do not know which group they are in. In double-blind studies, neither the participants nor the researchers administering the intervention and collecting data know who is in which group. Blinding is crucial for preventing bias in reporting and assessment of outcomes.

The data collected from intervention studies are analyzed to determine if there is a statistically significant difference in outcomes between the intervention and control groups. Positive results suggest that the intervention is effective, while negative results indicate it is not. Intervention studies are considered a high standard of evidence, particularly randomized controlled trials (RCTs), due to their ability to establish cause-and-effect relationships. They play a vital role in advancing medical knowledge and informing clinical practice and public health policy.
