Interstitiaalvedelikust is the fluid found in the interstitial space, the tiny gaps between cells in tissues. It is essentially a form of extracellular fluid, meaning it exists outside of the cells. This fluid plays a crucial role in the transport of nutrients from the blood capillaries to the cells and the removal of waste products from the cells back to the capillaries. It also acts as a medium for communication between cells.

The composition of interstitial fluid is similar to blood plasma, but with a lower concentration of proteins. It is formed from plasma that filters out of capillaries due to hydrostatic pressure. This filtration process is balanced by osmotic pressure, which draws fluid back into the capillaries. Any excess interstitial fluid that is not reabsorbed by the capillaries is collected by the lymphatic system and returned to the bloodstream. This constant movement and exchange of fluid are vital for maintaining tissue health and homeostasis. Disruptions in interstitial fluid balance can lead to conditions like edema, characterized by swelling due to excessive fluid accumulation.
