Unlike intramolecular forces, which hold atoms together within a molecule (like covalent or ionic bonds), intermolecular forces are weaker attractions between separate molecules.

The strength and type of intermolecular forces depend on the nature of the molecules involved. Key types include van der Waals forces, which encompass London dispersion forces (present in all molecules due to temporary fluctuations in electron distribution), dipole-dipole interactions (occurring between polar molecules with permanent dipoles), and hydrogen bonding (a particularly strong dipole-dipole interaction involving hydrogen bonded to a highly electronegative atom like oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine).

The presence and strength of these intermolekïliset forces directly influence macroscopic properties. For instance, substances with strong intermolecular forces, such as water with its extensive hydrogen bonding, tend to have higher boiling and melting points because more energy is required to overcome these attractions and separate the molecules.
