Interkostaaliheermoista

Interkostaaliheermoista is a Finnish term referring to the intercostal nerves. These nerves are part of the peripheral nervous system and originate from the thoracic spinal cord. They run between the ribs, hence the name "intercostal," meaning "between the ribs."

The intercostal nerves primarily serve motor and sensory functions. Motor branches innervate the intercostal muscles, which are crucial for breathing, including inhalation and exhalation. They also supply muscles of the abdominal wall. The sensory branches provide feeling to the skin and muscles of the chest wall and abdomen. This includes the ability to sense touch, pain, temperature, and pressure in these regions.

Disruption or irritation of the intercostal nerves can lead to a variety of symptoms, most commonly intercostal neuralgia, characterized by sharp, burning, or stabbing pain along the path of the affected nerve. This pain can be triggered or worsened by movements that involve the chest wall, such as deep breathing, coughing, or sneezing. Causes of intercostal nerve issues can include trauma, inflammation, nerve compression, or viral infections like shingles. Medical evaluation is necessary to diagnose the underlying cause and determine appropriate treatment.
