Inscriban

Inscriban is a form of the Spanish verb inscribir, meaning to inscribe, enroll, or register. In standard grammar, inscriban is the present subjunctive form for the third-person plural (ellos, ellas, ustedes) and also the affirmative imperative form for the ustedes form. In both uses, it expresses a command, request, or a hypothetical action directed at a group.

Usage: In subordinate clauses that express wishes, demands, necessity, or doubts, inscriban introduces the clause: Quieren que inscriban a los candidatos en la lista. As an independent command to a group, inscriban can appear in formal contexts: Inscriban sus nombres en la lista antes de las cinco.

Etymology and related forms: Inscriban derives from inscribir, from Latin inscribere, “to write in, to enroll.” It shares cognates with inscriptions in other Romance languages. In present indicative, the forms are inscribo, inscribes, inscribe, inscribimos, inscribís, inscriben. The second-person plural vosotros form in Spain uses inscribís for the present indicative and inscribid as the affirmative imperative; inscriban remains the form used for ustedes in imperative.
