InnoDB is the default storage engine for the MySQL relational database management system. It was originally developed by Innobase Oy, a Finnish company, which was later acquired by Oracle. InnoDB is designed to provide a high-performance, reliable, and transactional database system.

One of InnoDB's key features is its support for ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) transactions. This ensures that database operations are processed reliably, even in the event of system failures. Atomicity guarantees that transactions are all-or-nothing, meaning either all operations within a transaction are completed successfully, or none of them are. Consistency ensures that transactions bring the database from one valid state to another. Isolation prevents concurrent transactions from interfering with each other. Durability guarantees that once a transaction is committed, it will remain permanent, even in the case of power outages or crashes.

InnoDB utilizes a row-level locking mechanism, which allows for high concurrency by minimizing lock contention. This means that multiple transactions can access and modify different rows in a table simultaneously without blocking each other. It also supports foreign keys, which enforce referential integrity between tables, helping to maintain data accuracy and consistency.

The storage format of InnoDB involves clustered indexes, where the primary key determines the physical order of data rows on disk. This can lead to faster retrieval of records when querying by the primary key. InnoDB also uses a buffer pool to cache data and indexes in memory, significantly improving read and write performance. Furthermore, it supports features like full-text indexing and geospatial data types.
