Innløpsventiler, also known as intake valves or inlet valves, are crucial components in many mechanical systems, particularly internal combustion engines and pumps. Their primary function is to control the flow of a fluid, typically air-fuel mixture or exhaust gases, into a cylinder or chamber. In an engine, there are usually multiple intake valves per cylinder, each precisely timed to open and close during the engine cycle. The opening of an intake valve allows the combustible mixture to be drawn into the cylinder during the intake stroke, while its closing seals the chamber for compression and combustion.

The design and material of intake valves are critical for engine performance and longevity. They must withstand high temperatures and pressures, as well as corrosive elements. Common materials include steel alloys. The valve head, which seals against the valve seat, is designed to ensure a tight seal when closed, preventing leakage. The valve stem guides the valve and connects it to the valve train mechanism, which operates the valve opening and closing through the camshaft.

In pumps, inlet valves serve a similar purpose, allowing fluid to enter the pump chamber while preventing backflow. This ensures efficient pumping action. The operation of intake valves is synchronized with other engine or pump components to achieve the desired fluid dynamics and operational efficiency. Malfunctioning intake valves can lead to reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and potential engine damage.
