Információigényt is a Hungarian term that translates to "information need" in English. It refers to the recognition by an individual or group that there is a gap in their knowledge or understanding that can be filled by acquiring specific information. This need can arise in various contexts, from everyday personal curiosity to complex professional research.

The concept of information need is fundamental to information science and library studies. Understanding information needs is crucial for designing effective information retrieval systems, developing relevant educational programs, and providing targeted information services. When an information need is recognized, it typically triggers a process of information seeking behavior, where individuals actively search for, locate, evaluate, and use information to satisfy that need.

Information needs can be explicit or implicit. An explicit need is one that is clearly articulated, such as needing to find the opening hours of a shop. An implicit need is less defined and may not even be consciously recognized by the individual, such as a researcher who doesn't yet realize a particular piece of data would be vital to their work. Identifying and addressing both explicit and implicit information needs are key goals in information management and dissemination.
