Inflanty

Inflanty refers to the historical region of Livonia, primarily the southern part, which was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and later the Swedish Empire. The name "Inflanty" is a Polish and Latvian adaptation of the Latin name "Livonia." This territory was a significant theater of operations during the Polish-Swedish Wars and the Great Northern War.

The Duchy of Livonia was established in the 16th century, and after the Livonian War, its territory was divided. The southern part, corresponding to modern-day Latvia, became a Polish fief. In the early 17th century, Sweden gained control of northern Livonia. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth retained control of the southern part, known as Inflanty, until the First Partition of Poland in 1772, when it was annexed by the Russian Empire.

Throughout its history, Inflanty was a region of diverse ethnic and cultural influences, with Latvian, Polish, German, and Russian populations. Its strategic importance and frequent conflicts left a lasting impact on its development and identity. The name "Inflanty" is still sometimes used to refer to this historical region, particularly in Polish and Latvian contexts, although it is not an official administrative division today. The area is largely located within modern-day Latvia.
